**What is Sawan?**
Sawan (or Shravan) is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, spanning July–August. In 2025, the Purnimanta tradition (common in North India) marks it from July 11 to August 9, while the Amanta tradition (in South/West India) observes it from July 25 to August 23 .

Significance:
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this month commemorates Parvati’s penance to marry Shiva and Shiva’s consumption of poison during Samudra Manthan .

Spiritual Importance:
Fasting on Mondays (“Sawan Somwar Vrats”), performing Shiva Abhishekam (holy bath), chanting mantras like Om Namah Shivaya or the Maha Mrityunjaya, and visiting Shiva temples are considered exceptionally auspicious .

2. Preparations & Remedies BEFORE Sawan

a. Personal Purity & Lifestyle

Begin with a government of purity: eat sattvic meals, avoid garlic, onion, alcohol, and non‑veg, especially on Mondays .

Dress simply: men in white/khadi dhoti‑kurta and women in pastel cotton sarees/salwar suits; avoid bold or dark colors .

Morning clean-up: wake during Brahma Muhurat (~4:16–5:04 AM) , bathe, wear fresh clothes, and set up a clean altar.

b. Puja Supplies

Bel (Bilva) leaves: offer in sets of 3 or 5; ideally fresh and fragrant .

Panchamrit: water, milk, honey, curd, ghee—for Abhishekam (holy bath) .

Additional items: seasonal flowers (white/red depending on Rashi or neutrality), sugar, fruits, sweets, Dhoop (incense) and Diya (ghee lamp), holy water (Gangajal) .

c. Mantras & Devotional Tools

Prepare a Rudraksha mala for chanting ● Om Namah Shivaya and Maha Mrityunjaya mantra (Om Tryambakam…) .

Optionally, have a shruti or recording of Shiva Aarti or bhajans, and devotional music.

Keep a small Shiva shrine at home, possibly with a Narmadeshwar or Sphatik Shivling .

d. Charity & Donation

Donate white items on Mondays: milk, rice, sugar, clothes — to bless Moon (Chandra) and Venus (Shukra) energies for peace and prosperity .

3. Sawan Monday Puja Ritual (Step‑by‑Step)

1. Wake early (Brahma Muhurat) & perform a spiritual bath.

2. Arrange altar: Shivling or picture, Bel leaves, Panchamrit, water, lamps.

3. Begin with lighting incense and lamps, chanting Om Namah Shivaya or Gayatri mantra.

4. Abhishekam Sequence (Jalabhisheka):

Pour water → milk → honey → curd → ghee

Offer holy water (Gangajal), sugar, fruit juices (per Rashi) .

5. Offer Bel leaves, a garland or petals of fresh flowers.

6. Chant Rudra/Stotra/Aartis:

Rudrashtakam, Shiva Sahasranama, Maha Mrityunjaya, Om Namah Shivaya—at least 108 times .

7. Perform Aarti with ghee lamp; sing or play Shiva bhajans.

8. Conclude with pranam, offer Prasad (fresh fruits/sweets), and distribute donation items.

9. Observe optional fast from sunrise to sunset, breaking fast after offering prayers .

4. Order of Offering: Bel Leaves or Water First?

If you have fresh Bel leaves, offer them right after Abhishekam, while chanting mantras.

If only water is available, perform a simple Jalabhishek first and then offer Bel leaves.
